Hi, like when i pull crab pots from out at sea usually there is plenty of seaweed wrapped around the pots and ropes so i think that belongs to me  who owns it 60-70 miles out at sea,im not to worried theres plenty to go round

I agree with you 3 allotments, mine wasn't of the beach it was what came out of are nets at sea, it took a day to clean it all out of the nets so in my eyes I've earn't it.

With the asparagus mulching would I keep it off the stems or just leave it as it falls?

Thanks

Dan

I think I read somewhere that seaweed added to the potato beds prior to planting can help with their flavour?  Or maybe I made that up  :nowink:

If you've ever grown your own International Kidney potatoes in the hope that because it's the same variety grown on Jersey they would taste the same, and then been disappointed, you might well assume it's the seaweed that gives them their special flavour.

Unfortunately the practice of collecting and using "vraic" (the Channel Islanders' local name for seaweed) seems to be much less common these days, and I for one think the flavour has more or less gone too.  :(
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Is it worth adding a bag or two to the compost bin?

Yes - there have been other threads on here about the removal of seaweed from the shore-line which I posted on. If I remember right, the area above the high water mark belongs to the landowner adjacent to it and you need their permission to take any seaweed. The area between the high and low water mark belongs to the Crown. I'm sure anything a fisherman dredges up out at sea doesn't come into this category - you lucky things!
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

I think I prefer to put salt on my spuds after I've cooked them but I might experiment with adding some pepper prior to planting, bit of butter wouldn't go amiss either.
