Cold weather nipping of potato leaves
« on: May 06, 2010, 16:36 »
Although I wasn't aware that we had had a frost here, my pot leaves just showing through were nipped and went purple/brown, There was some green at the bottom of the shoots and today, with the light rain, they look better. I am hoping that they were the first chits to surface so there should be others. Do you think they will suffer crop-wise..?
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Hard to say with potatoes. Listen for weather forecasts of frost and if you hear anymore predicted, cover the spud tops with fleece.

No frost was predicted but it must have been near to it. They are still looking better and today I have earthed them up as it is supposed to be colder in the nights here this next week.

We have the chance of a frost or two in the week ahead down here, so I would imagine there is a high chance you will get one up north.

If frost is predicted in your area either chuck a little extra soil over them..as earthing up...
or go to the expence of buying fleece....most of mine are now between 3 - 6" above ground...somes purplish....they are already earthed up...so if 'ole Jack nips a couple of leaves...they'll survive...maybe a few days late...but once on their way...they get there... ;)

Have a good season....
