Ground cover ideas
« on: March 26, 2015, 22:35 »
I am wondering what to plant at the front of a border which faces East but only gets early morning sun (so I guess it classifies as part-shade?). Ideally I would like something evergreen with pretty flowers which hangs over the edge of the border. All ideas much appreciated.

Lots of choices. Have a look at the Heuchera group .Most are evergreen or semi-evergreen Three favourites of mine are Plum Pudding, , Green Spice, or Delta Dawn all grown for their foliage, tolerance to shade and as ground cover

For more widespread ground cover in partial shade there is Ajuga Reptans with its blue flower spikes in spring, but it is deciduous. Also look at the Geranium (Cranesbill) genus Some are evergreen, others are deciduous, but they all flower well in partial shade and at different times, providing good ground cover..

Periwinkle (Vinca) would meet the remit I think.

I have this easy going campanula, which I can't pronounce  :nowink:
https://www.plantify.co.uk/Campanula-portenschlagiana/plant-326

I started with a couple of small potfuls, which made clumps, which I regularly split up - and now I have it nearly everywhere  :D

You often see them cheap about now, cos they're often sold as Mothers' day plants.

Oooh, that's what I was going to suggest. It's a cracker of  a plant that gives a fantastic display of beautiful purple bells every year without fail  :D

ooooh - beware Periwinkle - a tenacious beast which will spread far and wide.......
small, Welsh and almost certainly bonkers, but can be tamed with Talisker, if required

I would always recommend Saxifraga umbrosa (aka London Pride).  It is evergreen, doesn't mind shade - or any conditions come to that - spreads well and is easily propagated from the runners it puts out.  It is one of the few ground cover plants to be successful up here.  Pretty wee flowers, too.  Agree with all the other suggestions too - including Vinca (which struggles to get a hold here, so I tend not to think of it as a plant that takes over).
