hens drinking water
« on: June 19, 2009, 09:02 »
Hi Everyone,
I am new to the site and to keeping chickens,I have 5 lovely chikens that I got a few weeks ago. They are 12 weeks old and seem to be thriving in their new home.I have noticed that they seem to be drinking less water recently, they get fresh water every day and the container is clean and easily accesible so why does it seem to be untouched ?I would greatly appreciate any help

Hi Sinead

Welcome to the Hen House

Is there any chance they could be drinking from another water source?
Quite often see mine drinking from the pond or even a puddle even though they have fresh water available ::)

Hi Sinead. Welcome from me too. :)

We can often tell how much it's rained from how much water is left in the drinker at the end of the day  :)

Like Vember says, if there's a dirty puddle, they seem to prefer that to clean water. They're very like dogs in that respect  :D

Well that makes sense! There are a few puddles around alright and as I look out the window I'd say more rain is on the way! Thanks for easing my mind!

When I clean out the waters, the chickens prefer to drink the dirty water I have tipped out, than the fresh water.

If it has rained and they are eating grass and other greens will get water from that.
