poorly chick
« on: April 25, 2009, 00:35 »
hi there, I recently purchased 6 chicks, we have already lost one, which caused tears with my daughters, we now have another one with breathing problems.  we have isolated it from the other 4, but it is struggling to stand and is gasping rather than breathing, and is very quiet.  I think I know what people are going to say but was just wondering if anyone can suggest anything before we lose any of the others.

thank you Binarose

Hi,  Try and find a local vet to have a look at it.  Respiratory infections can be serious in chickens and need antibiotics.

she's gone... will contact a vet tomorrow because I'm worried about the other ones now, although they do seem to be eating and drinking fine........

Don't beat yourself up about this. Chicks are so small that once something gets ahold of them and you notice it they are too far gone to save.

how old are the chicks? what was the housing like where you collected them from? it could be a fungal infection caught from the brooder. I dont think there is much you can do Im afraid. keep them dry and warm,(check temp is right for age) make sure the chick crumb you have is well within the sale by date and not stale.

hi foxy... they are approx 3 weeks old, and various sizes... a couple are like david and golith!!.

We got them from a place outside Nottingham and it all looked very clean, our daughters selected them from about 40 chicks.  The chap must have had around 500 hens around the place.

They are in our spare room in a large box with sawdust being changed daily, fresh water and it was a brand new bag of chick feed thats well in date.

think we have a steep learning curve
