Problem with stored onions with green shoots???
« on: November 18, 2011, 13:36 »
I've just checked on my stored onions, in a potato bag covered over in the dark, anyone know why this is happening and if they are ok to use and also can it be stopped?

onions are stored in the light, not in the dark (that's for storing spuds) and they used to be tied up in a braid and hung up in the shed, so the air could get round them to keep them cool.

saying that, but it has been too warm this year, and many things are not storing well  :(

Eat the shooting ones first, and if all else fails - slice/chop them and freeze in polybags, double wrapped.

I think that if there are green shoots the onions will not keep through the winter months.
Agree with above use asap or freeze. We always store ours in the light and preferably dry atmosphere .Being enclosed in a bag probably caused condensation and moisture taken in by the onions has set off regrowth.
I think the advice to dry onions well before storing is a good one to follow. The outer skin needs to be crisp and dry, even then it is best to regularly check them and use any suspect ones first.
