Moving hens to new location help
« on: April 14, 2011, 21:28 »
I'm moving to Lincs and my 4 chooks are coming too. I have 2 cat carriers which they could travel up. The journey is 2 1/2 hours long. Should I stop on route for food and water or just do the trip without stopping? They are going to stay at my sis while I set up their new run.

Thanks

Last weekend my grandson moved 2 hens from his house to mine, a journey of 300 miles.  They have been retired and will spend the rest of their days here. This is the third lot hes made me a present of
Anyway, the hens travelled in a cat basket just like yours will and when they stopped half way he put water in the basket while they all had a brew.  They arrived here unstressed and settled in easily and are already out free ranging with my lot. :) Thats the hens, not the people
Good luck with your move, dont envy you one bit but your hens will be fine if the days not too hot.

Two months ago, we moved too.  We transported the hens in their hen house, inside the moving van.  They never made a peep and were never the wiser until we put the hen house down on their new paving slabs at the new house, freshly covered with bedding.  We didn't let them outside of their run for about a week and a half.  We secured the garden for them before we let them out to free range.  We made sure they were familiar with the sounds, etc. of their new home before letting them out of the run.  Hope this helps.
When I die I will slide in sideways, a glass of wine in one hand and chocolate in the other, screaming, "Whooo hooo!  What a ride!" as life is to be enjoyed to the fullest!

Thank you littleredhen. The run is going to be built before they return from my sis. House has to be completed in next 4 weeks, so house and run will be done with the roofing section coming up in the removal van.
