Title: Anyone experienced with egg bind??
Post by: Chookiechook on September 29, 2009, 19:49
I took back a quail that I had sold to the local garden centre today..... she was trying to lay her first egg and it was stuck!!

When you looked up into her vent you could see the bulge of the egg and also as she strained, you could see a very small hole .... just bigger than a pin head, with the egg shell visible through it...

I tried everything, steam, warm water, ky jelly etc etc but to no avail.

What would you have done :(

The egg was intact and the size of a normal (ie not first) egg.

As a last resort, I would have aspirated the egg and removed the shell. I would then have given her a course of baytril.

Took her to chookie vet and he manually squeezed it out without breaking the egg..... but he did a little cut to the membrane :(  He likened it to a lady having an episiotomy (sp)

She didnt bleed and is currently back with the others, but protected with a wire hamster cage top :)  Didnt think she would appreciate the attention of the cock bird :)

She is dust bathing and eating well, but to be honest I am a little pessimistic as to whether she will be ok.... even if she gets over this problem, I feel she may struggle to lay properly next time :(

Anyhow, we will see..... I shall let you know either way!!
