Mystery Veg...I think!
« on: July 01, 2012, 17:34 »
Hi...

You guys seemed to successfully ID that plant so what is this one?!

I recently replenished my planter with mulch from my wormery and since planting pepper seedlings in it I got 101 of these things. The stem/leave feel rough even spikey...I hope the photo does them justice as I'd like to know if I'm wasting my precious balcony space cultivating these!

Thanks,

Incy

Something like that.  Melon perhaps.  Had you put any melon seeds in the wormery ?

We eat melons and squash so potentially it could be either...interesting!

How will they fair on a balcony? I'm loathed to just bin them but space is VERY restricted.

Thanks for the swift replies...gold stars all round! I'll keep you posted as to what I end up with!

You may well be in the same boat as the people discussing 'cheap seed'  I let some 'Squash' seed grow on which came up around one of the Compost Bins last summer.  Very vigorous plants, lots of 'fruits'.  Looked superb.  Grew well to 'storage' size, despite my Japanese Squash struggling with last years weather.

When we came to cut them they were 'seedless' with very 'soft', almost Melon scented flesh, but totally useless for any culinary purpose - too soft & 'wet' & not, I don't think a Melon, as such, due to being 'veg' flavoured.

Many of the commercial varieties of Squash are hybrids, so they do not come true from seed.  I personally would not waste time / space again.  The exception would be if I was sure they were Uchiki Kuri, although even then, it is a bit late now to have them just starting.

Courgette or cucumber? Been looking at and handling both today...

They do look like cues or squashes.  They need lots of room, things like squashes etc need about 3ft each way!  But it is possible to grow them and cucumbers up netting, so vertical space rather than horizontal.

I might be tempted to keep one or two just to see what they are!

  true - I was only thinking that the other day when looking at all the seedlings springing up in all the beds where I had dug the compost from the bin.  Same with tomatoes, and the bother I had trying to grow achocha last year and it has self seeded everywhere  ::)
