Mystery Tree
« on: April 08, 2012, 19:27 »
Can anyone identify this tree? I was told it was a damson but it really doesn't look like one to me. It's young and in a huge pot. The picture was taken two weeks ago.

The idiots are winning.

Ha, no, I have lots of damson trees at my allotment hanging over the fence from the railway. 7 of them, all dangling over my plot. I am just happy I finally know what this thing is.

I had first choice of thirty new plots and asked for that one because the trees provided some shelter from the railway. I had no idea they were damsons. Imagine my delight when all those gorgeous fruits appeared!

The catkins (flowers) are a good early source of pollen for insects. You can also snip off twigs and use them as tickling sticks  :)

Definitely pussy willow but I would leave it in it's pot

Unless you have a massive allotment this will take over quite swiftly.

We had one of these when I was younger and, even though it was confined to the rockery, it grew big! (great for climbing though!

Willow can also make a good living fedge and even a living shelter for children to play in. Will provide lots of new shoots when coppiced ideal for canes as long as they are dried out first otherwise they will grow.
Thanks
Kris
