What's happening to my seedlings?
« on: April 08, 2012, 11:31 »
Hi, I'm very confused as to what is eating my seedlings.  I have a raised bed and I've planted lettuce, carrots and radish in it at the moment.  I started the lettuce in the greenhouse so when planted out there were a couple of inches but the carrots and radish I planted straight out.  I covered them over with fleece but when I check them each day I'm finding that things are being nibbled.  Most of the lettuce are gone. They looked like something had just nibbled the egdes then they went but 1 has been left behind untouched.

The radish have come through and were fine until today.  Some of the leaves are on the floor around the seedlings and some seedlings have been eaten.  The carrots are only just showing signs of coming through but i'm sure the same will happen to them.

What can it be?  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I would say slugs ?
some people are like slinkys......they're really good for nothing, but they still bring a smile to your face as you push them down the stairs!!

I forgot to say that my bed is surrounded by gravel so shouldn't this stop slugs?

No it won't  :(
we have gravel paths and I quite often see slugs and snails gleefully heading towards my seedlings  >:(

slug pellets stop slugs, put them in a plastic bottle with a large hole cut into it if you worry about the pellets leeching into the soil, or try putting bran in the bottles instead of slug pellets

If some of the seedlings have been up rooted, I would say mices!

I have had the same problem  and as I put down some slug pellets and it it still happening I thought it might be rodents. Spotted a rat by a bag of veg scraps waiting to go to the lotty so set traps and got 2 mice :)

Always feel a bit guilty about nobbling the mice as I think they are cute. However not that cute :(

Still after the rat, but I can wait ;)

in theory yes but it would depend on how fine the gravels is, as I have found unless its very gritty they are still not put off and I think slugs and snails seem to find a way

Thanks for your help guys.  Will try the slug pellets to see if that helps.

Don't some slugs go underground too?  So they could attack from below!   :(
