Toms in an unheated greenhouse?
« on: April 13, 2010, 20:21 »
Hi when do you ll think it safe to put Tomato plants into an unheated greenhouse?
Last year I left it until the first week of May but was I too cautious and can they withstand the night time minimum  temperatures of 5c that we are currently getting?
99% Organic and 1% Slug Pellets.

Allotment holder since 27th May 2007.

I understood that below 10C and your plants will not be happy - there's a thread running about 'blue toms' which have been in an unheated greenhouse and not looking happy ...
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

If you really must put them in the g/h then make a cloche round them, or cover with fleece.
They are really still struggling at the moment

I would leave it a bit longer if I was you. I'm in Liverpool and some of mine has to be moved into my unheated greenhouse as I ran out of space on my window ledges and they are not enjoying it at all. I'm hoping that they will rally as the weather gets better and the night temp stops dropping to 5 C or so but I have backups still inside if they opt for the die option in the do or die dilemma they are faced with.
Be like a duck. Calm on the surface but always paddling like the dickens underneath.

I bought one of those £10 mini zip up plastic greenhouses and I have that inside my unheated greenhouse.  My tomatoes are in there now (they were originally on the windowsill) and they seem very healthy.  It has made things much easier having it as it means I have space indoors for more things!

I've started and kept my toms in my conservatory and are quite happy.  It gets cold at night though.  Anything that needs to be kept in the greenhouse, stays in the conservatory until it starts warming up.  Everything else goes up to the lottie in the g/h, eg, cabbage, caulis, sprouts, onions, etc.

I've got my cape gooseberry plants, cukes, peppers in the conservatory and all doing ok.

Mine are OK in a zip-up greenhouse on my balcony
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

I recently moved mine into an unheated greenhouse and put a cloche over them for good measure. Went away for a couple of days when it was sunny and had cooked them; any leaves or stems touching the rims of black pots were burnt through. Have since removed the cloche and they seem happier.

Put mine in last week - they appear to be doing well. I have 5 plants about 15-20cm tall (went in to the greenhouse like this) and 12 pots of seed, 5 of which are sprouting already.

If I can get our 12' ghouse dismantled, moved and set up (mantled?  :)  ) by the end of the weekend I think I will try building a house-within-a-house using bubble wrap and move my 20cm toms from the windowledge into there...

Mine have been out in the unheated greenhouse for a few weeks. They are standing on a layer of bubble wrap and I cover them with propogator lids and more bubble wrap at night time (taken off again in the morning). Chillies are out there too, all doing fine.
