sweetcorn tips please!

hiya all
just bought some sweetcorn plants and wanted some tips on them, as the label doesnt say much!
wheres the best place to plant them?
do they like sun/shade?
lots of water or not?
and i take it you harvest in aug/sept?
any other pointers or tips ive forgotten would be gratefully received!!

Plant in blocks (aids pollination) with plants 18" apart..
Sun & sheltered from the wind.
Water in dry spells when cobs are swelling.
Harvest when tassles turn brown & kernals ooze a milky white when you stick your thumb nail in.
Round the watch shotgun guard against squirrels.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

They like soil a bit on the rich side.  You can earth them up a bit as their support roots are not famous for growing on a windy island, but need the wind for good pollination.

Hoe around them carefully so as not to damage the surface roots.

Rats took a lot of mine one year  :evil:

woe betide if a rat should even look at mine!
all planted up, mind you they dont stand a chance as ive just necked a litre of sangria with hubby in the garden, and i dont normally drink. it was just so drinkable in this lovely weather, they are a bit wonky!! :lol:  :lol:

mmmm worried about the wind pollunaton now as they are in a sheltered part reafood, can i rub them together to do it!!

wonky grown sweetcorn will taste even sweeter ( especially if you down another bottle :wink: )
if it grows, it grows! if it doesnt ,, ah well .. there's always next year. :-)

are you sure you planted it wonky ... could be that your sweetcorn is straight but your eyes are wonky! :drunken:

my eyes are always wonky and its not the sangria!! (i have a tumour on my optic nerve and therefore virtually blind in one eye)
im blaming the sweetcorn, they must be growin towards the sun! :lol:
sangria and me is not a good combination if i want to get anything done after its drunk!!!

definately none taken, cps, my eyes could be so much worse, im lucky in a way.
lets hope for some lovely sweetcorn for the bbq and many more balmy evenings with more sangria, ive never felt so relaxed and all the kids are in be too!
shame we only have 15 litres left!! :lol:  :lol:

Just a breeze will do it, but if in doubt, when the pollen is dropping, give the plants a tap or two. (And I don't mean water taps).

Was the Sangria part of your duty free entitlement after your trip to the Island.  When I worked in the Co-op we did actually have people come and ask how much duty free they were allowed!  During the war you also had to show your passport in order to come to the Island.

hi  :D ,
    I planted mine last year with a climbing french bean growing up them and a pumkin underneath it's called a three sisters bed , the bean feeds the sweetcorn and so on it seemed to work I had more cobs on than the neighbours so there's quite a few of us growing them that way this year, jan. ps I rather a pimms
