Lohmann Browns - when do they start laying??
« on: April 15, 2009, 10:36 »
We are new to poultry keeping.  we have all the equipment needed and have had it checked over by somebody experienced in this field.  My problem is NO EGGS, we bought 4 Lohmann Browns which were about 18 weeks old, we have had them just short of a month, they appear healthy and are filling out well but each day nothing.  Am I being impatient? Other sites I have looked at have suggested it will happen in time

welcome to the forum!
if you put some pictures up of your girls, we'll try to guess how old they really are - if you look at another similar thread in the forum, the girls were younger than they'd been told..

I don't know where you got them from, but some people will sell a 14 week old pullet and say its point of lay, so they could be younger than you think.

Last summer, our Babcock flock started laying at 17 weeks, but some waited until they were 23 weeks old.  The Amberlinks on the other hand, both my last flocks didn't start laying until they were 26 weeks ish, and they got to point of lay at different times of the year.  We had a goldline who I thought would never lay, she started at around 45 weeks, and Chickenlady on here had a Babcock that didn't start until she was 40 odd weeks old.

Like Andrea said, any chance of a photo or 6, so we can see them?

Are their combs getting bigger and nice and red?  When you go to see them, do they squat in front of you?  both good signs of being ready to lay!!
