Yellow onion leaf tips
« on: April 10, 2017, 15:31 »
Heya. Planted out these sets from about 3 weeks ago till last week ( did them in batchs) . They were raised in modules and hardened off. They have all started to show yellowing at tips and some have brown dry tips. Same across earlier and later sowings. About 50% effected. It has been rather dry since planting out , wonder if that has anything to do with it. Never seen b4. Pic attached. Any help/advice would be great

This is due to stress. Probably too dry but could also be cold, we have had frosts.

Plenty of pests and diseases which can cause shallots and onions to suffer, but at this stage lack of water is more likely.

A good water, perhaps with a weak liquid feed in it should cheer them up no end.  ;)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Re feed. Just a general purpose fruit and veg one.   Re the weedkiller. I havent and i know my neighbours are organic .

I did have a dreaded thought. First time dug manure in which has rotted over 18 months. Thought it could be contaminated but my neighbour uses same without issue so hoping nowt to do with that

Also, do plant them a bit deeper next time. ;)

Absolutely the whole of that set should be sub soil. A strong wind would put that plant in trouble. :)

I planted mine deeper this year for the first time. I was getting fed up of having to put them back as I kept finding them scattered all over the place by mice or birds. I then compacted the soil, and none have been dug up so far... None have actually come up either, but I hope to save a lot of frustration if it works.

I shall do. I think pulling thrm out off modules lifted them out their soil. Ill give em a gentle press down once weve had some rain and soil little softer

Better just to hoe the soil around them then rake some back over the sets to create a small ridge. Don't be afraid to plant onions deep, say an  inch or so sub soil level, they will get up no bother provided you don't have a very heavy soil and the depth helps stabilise the plant and also, I think, helps keep the pests away from the roots. When I transplant my seed raise onions I always have them about an inch and a half below the soil level watering also reduces that distance quite a lot.
