Bare root fruit trees
« on: February 08, 2013, 19:27 »
Surprised that they were delivered this week, but they have been so...

Will it be too cold to get them in this weekend?

What do i do with them instead?

Thanks for the advice.

If they are well wrapped and the roots aren't going to dry out,  then leaving in them in cool dark place (garage or shed) for up a week wont hurt them

Like Jamrock says if your soil is not frozen (or waterlogged) it looks like a good weekend to get them in.  But better to do a proper careful planting job than plant them in a rush.

Where's your location?
Sometimes my plants grow despite, not because of, what I do to them.

Thanks  Jamrock - I was hoping someone would say that.

Sites a bit exposed but the forecast says I ahould avoid a frost on Sat night, planning on planting sat. Ground is free draining (to say the least) so I've been working on it all winter and haven't found the ground frozen at any point.

The roots aren't overly well wrapped, i could add to it, did seem a bit dry. But wouldn't like to say if my garge or shed is frost free...

Near milton keynes before someone asks - need to add that to my details...

Don't just leave them in the wrapping without soil for more than a day or two.  You should rehydrate them as soon as possible by soaking in a bucket of water for about 24h.  I would then heel them in somewhere - or in a pot - if you are not ready to plant them out properly yet.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

As Yorkie says, heel them in asap. Dont leave them wrapped up for any longer than necessary.

I planted mine a couple of weeks ago.  The instructions said they were ok in the plastic wrapping but to take them out and soak them in a bucket of water for a couple of hours once a week, re wrap them and store in a cool but frost free place.  Mine came during all that snow, so I followed those instruction until the ground de frosted.  Time will tell whether it worked  ::)

Sure it will be fine Annen, amazed at how they bare-rooted trees outside wilkos till spring without dying!

Best practice though is to heel them in. Even if its only into some compost in a pot.
