dead fridges/freezers are excellent for storing root veg, and things like apples though...according to Bob Flowerdew  ;)

I use an old freezer for storing layers pellets and bird seed.  Cant see that having them in a cold shed makes any difference as they are not working anyway.
Must make that clear, you dont have them running  for storing veg etc::)

No, you don't need them running for simple storage of veg - but Spartacat wrote of 'running a freezer' which I took to mean it would be used as a freezer rather than storage cabinet, thus having to deal with extremes of temperature whilst functioning  :)
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

My mother used to keep her veg in newspapers inside plastic boxes that her meat was delivered in, inside an even larger storage box (meant for garden tools) by the back door.  We always had fresh veg through winter but she kept an eye of it and rotated and used it when necessary.  Her meals weren't decided by what she fancied but by what needed to be eaten.

I currently have a large rigid cooler box by my back door just for a few to-hand things. :)

We use the garage (when there's space amongst the mountains of "worth restoring" furniture) and then ship it into a large larder fridge in the kitchen.

Under the stairs is great for potaotes and butternut squash.... last year's store kept us going well into late spring  :)
