« on: February 22, 2009, 17:39 »
I thought I'd already put this question up but being blonde cant find it now to check if there are any answers.

How much growing space do I need to grow enough vegetables to feed 3 adults, please?

do you mean to feed 3 adults all year round?

Are they vegetarians or will they be eating meat as well?

I remember seeing (I think a university) that claimed to be able to provide a family of four with all of their veggies for a year from 9 square Meters... I don't think I could do that.

Try typing your question into google as well.

Did you mean to post two threads on the same question, elibump?

The overlap can get a bit confusing.

I agree with the points made by Christine in the other plot - it's a really difficult question to answer as there are so many other variables which we don't know.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Depends what crops you want, what you like to eat, how many portions of veg do you have a week - spuds for example, take up a lot of space that you can use to grow millions of lettuces ( I exaggerate of course!) It depends on your area, your growing plot itself (shady? sunny?) what amount of space you have, do you have or want a GH or polytunnel?

think i read somewhere for fruit and veg, for the whole year, you need about 0.33 of an acre. Don't know how you do it mind.

The original ten pole allotment (approx. 300 square yards) was designed to keep a family in veg all year. Probably 2 adults, grandma and about 6 nippers. They ate a lot of spuds to fuel hard manual work so about a quarter would be growing spuds.

I presume that was for veg for a traditional diet not vegetarians?

Thanks everyone - Sorry Yorkie, as I said I had a blonde moment and couldnt find my original question & thought perhaps I'd not clicked the right button to post it.

3 adults, not entirely vegetarian but eat more veggies than most people we know.  Plot is dreadful but raised beds are coming along slowly just trying to find something to do with all the stones and rocks left over after clearing.  Will probably use them for paths.  Thanks again everyone.
