I've recently got a new allotment full of grass and weeds.  I'm midway through the digging  .  My soil is clay so I need to add plenty of humus and lots of nutrients.  Can I put a layer of fresh horse manure down at this time of year?

Welcome to the forums, LMorgan, you might want to pop over to the Welcome forum and introduce yourself properly if you'd like to 

Firstly, I'd put fresh manure aside to rot for some months, rather than on the soil if possible.  if it's too fresh then it can rob the soil of nutrients as it rots down, and if you plant into it then the plants can get burnt (as a general rule).

Secondly, don't put any manure where you plan to grow parsnips or carrots - unless you're going for the funniest-shaped vegetable prize in the allotment show

Thanks for your reply!  It's as I thought then    I guessed it would be wiser to let it compost before adding to the soil.
