Main crop spuds
« on: April 23, 2012, 16:02 »
With all this rain, I guess its not a great idea to put the spuds in yet, and it looks like its going to rain all week, so how late can I put them in? at least the nights... so far that is... are getting a little warmer here (Heathrow) tbh I not got them yet, I got a coupon from T&M and get some 'Desiree' I confess I got them because they are recommended on this forum very highly, 60 tubers, but I think I need to chit them first? and that will take another week at least, I already have firsts, and seconds in, so I have enough spuds to keep me (I hope) until they are ready, any advice please

I put mine in just before the rain, so hoping they're going to be okay really  :(

I live not far from you (Whitton).  It's definitely getting warmer at nights and according to the weather reports there'll be no more frosts here... I hope not!

My main crop went in this weekend - the plot is starting to look worked, lovely!

First earlies have been earthed up in their bags time and again; hopefully some spuds will be ready soon.

I planted mine this morning! with sunshine & showers you have to take a risk.

Where I live I got 7.5lb of 1st & 2nd earlies, desiree and maris piper for £6.85.

Best shop round as I did buy from T&M last year and wasn't very impressed with them at all
A novice gardener and looking forward to getting seriously fit with my allotment!

The allotment is 16 ft wide and roughly 90 ft long split into 8 plots!

No need to chit them Dopey--- plant them straight in when you can

You could always start them chitting by planting each one in compost in a small pot with the end with the eyes uppermost and just under the surface. Keep them moist and somewhere warm and light, and in no time they will send up chits.

When you plant them the compost will be full of little roots.
I`m left handed, what`s your excuse?

60 tubers to do that with!

Faffing R Us!

Just get them straight in, they'll catch up. You'll still be earlier than I have the last two years.

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?
