:?: I have two 7 week olds, but have no idea of their breed type. They were from Living Eggs which hatched at our school. One is white (and a boy I think) the other is a pretty brown with creamy bits!

Has anyone any idea what they are?

Many thanks

Boo

What a lovely lesson for the children  :D

Did the people you got the eggs from not say what they were ?

No - they wouldn't even confirm the sexes, although warwickshire rare breeds (which is close to me) says that the strain they use always have white cockerels and brown hens  :( . The eggs arrive on about day 19 and then the incubator and brooder stay in school for two weeks. The school then have the option of rehoming the chicks or sending them back with the brooder - I don't know to what fate!  The children really love watching them hatch - even the more challenging ones stay quiet and still when watching them.

The good thing is I work at the school so can take in photo's etc to keep the children posted whilst they are growing - they may even go in for a short visit.

Hi blualgoo,

we must be close as I am only 1 mile away from Warwickshire rare breeds.

I think the chooks are hubbards, JA757 (white) and Jacpac/redpac (red), these are a common meat breed.  I have 1 dozen as day olds every 8 weeks.

Anyhow at 7 weeks they will be eager to get out and get amongst the grass, earth and things I always get mine out at about 5-7 weeks depending on the weather

Snozzer - how long have you been keeping chickens then? What do you do with soooooo many? (do you eat them?) I take it they're not pets with names?  Southam?

The white one looks very Amberlink-like. GrannieAnnie would have a better idea but it looks like ours did a couple of months back.

Thanks Poultrygeist - I have just emailed Grannie Annie after finding a link from google about JA757's (from Snozzer). The white one looks very similar to some that she has on her blog - so who knows (well I certainly don't). The next two or three will definately be sexed and I will know what breed they are - or maybe I will choose the pretty ones!!

Yoohooo, sorry I'm a bit late tonight!  I've answered Blulagoo's email the best I can!

You're right Rob, they do look a bit like the amberlinks don't they?  or could be an Amber Star which I think is basically the same breed.  The brown one could be any brown hybrid, they look so similar.  The legs are very yellow though, so I was wondering actually, if they could be a leghorn mix???

I don't think they are 757's though, as they are quite slim at 7 weeks, and our 757's re only 5 weeks, but look twice the width of that white one.  I think blu has got herself a laying hen (brown) and maybe a cockerel (the white one!)  and why would anyone give a school meat chicks to look after?  Anyway, that's just my opinion.
