Lovely Squashes
« on: May 12, 2010, 21:38 »
At last my Squashes have germinated  :D

Im growing a few different varietys (Crown Prince, Hooligan, Festival and  Butternut).

Are they all ok in the same area on my plot? was just thinking do i need to be worryed about cross pollination?

Cheers MW.
I'm very important. I have many leather-bound books and my apartment smells of rich mahogany.

Only if you were thinking of saving seed for next year :)

I've got Crown Prince doing well, I also did some Butternut (saved seed from a supermarket one) but those haven't germinated at all :(
I guess being a cheapskate doesn't always pay!!

Lotty holder since Aug 09... I've FINALLY finished clearing it! On with the p.lanting  ....

After the first dozen courgettes you will be longing for a butterkin or pumpette.

If it wasn`t for the fact that you can smother courgette in butter and pepper i would not bother with `em. :)

As in squash you are eating the fruit, it does not matter how the plants cross breed as the fruit is part of the parent plant. Where you eat the seeds, like with sweetcorn, you are eating the result of the pollenation, and so cross breeding will change the taste.

As i've got some weird and wonderful pumkins/ courgettes / squashes this year lke hungarian finger fruit and green, yellow, white and striped pattipan, Fujitsu black, blue ballet and  new england pie  pumkins as well as courgettes slick pic and defender I reckon I might save one seed from each to what happens could be the start of a whole new species :D :D

I may be wrong, but I would recon that as long as you kept winter and summer squashes apart, whatever cross you get could be interesting (but you would not want a pumpkin that tastes of marrow or a courgette with a rind like a pumpkin, so keeping them apart could be a good idea).

Good excuse for a repeat for the benefit of the newcomers.

A pumpkin crossed with a marrow:

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

My picture of a plant I gave to a neighbour. Was supposed to be a trailing marrow., the seeds were saved from one. He said it tasted fine, but I keep forgetting to ask how he cooked it!
