Prolapsed hen but now ok. Advice please
« on: September 28, 2009, 10:26 »
We noticed one of our hens had been pecked round the tail and was bleeding. When I went to fetch her out, I noticed she had prolapsed.
Popped her in a box while I gathered my thoughts and some saline solution and it's righted itself.

What would be the next move other than keeping an eye on her.

Will pop some germolene on her tail where its been pecked (thanks sarah ;))

I popped my girl that prolapsed in a box in a dark room, my main aim was to allow her time to heal by not laying (she stayed in for a week) . I'd just keep her quiet away from the others if possible :)

Keeping my fingers crossed for you that it's a one off

Sarah :)

Reducing feeding and only giving a little mixed corn instead of pellets will stop them laying.  A drop of haemorrhoid cream will reduce the swelling.

Fringers crossed for her Rob   :)

That would be possible. She could share the shed with the hedgehog but then reintroduction would be tricky.
She was being picked on even while I held her to pick her up. They are very bitchy and would know she was weak even after a week. Hmmmm.

Got no pile cream in but could get some. ALways handy  :D

Will keep her calm in a dark corner for now and see how she gets on. I suspect it will be like a holiday for her.

Funny how no-one has it 'for themeselves'

Thanks for all advice. I surprised myself by not having a clue what I need to do other than wash my hands and try to pop it back in. I'm great in a crisis, as long as it's not mine ! :D

I'll get some in this afternoon. Just checked on her and shes cooing and gurgling at me while I asked her how she was. Little bit messy at the back end but I'll leave her to settle a while longer before wiping her bum.
She's had a palmful of corn and a few mealworms and only has light from the slots in the box. DOes she need to be in near darkness or just dim ?

dim should be fine, even though you are still feeding her, drop the intake to about a quarter what she would normally have, plenty of fluids though, and no calcium suppl.

She's got a pot of water in that hasn't yet been spilt. I'll give a little bit of corn before bedtime and hope doesn't lay.
She'll have the hooligan hedgehog keeping her awake at night.

I'll tackle reintroduction in a day or so. ::)

I found an egg in the nest box not long after I boxed her up so Im hoping that was today's one. It wasn't very big so not sure why she prolapsed, unless she's been having trouble for a while and it's always popped back before we spot it.
Who knows. She's fine as she is thanks to everyone's advice.  :)

She did lay an egg in the box but seems quite chirpy still. I'm going to have a check on her shortly.
Just feel sorry for her being picked on like she was. Poor girl.

When we had one we used the pile cream and it was fab, also cleaned the area with dilute iodine.   Ours hasn't laid again since and it was over a month ago (she is moulting now though too).  I have been keeping an eye on her bum as I was worried about egg binding so every now and again she gets a bit of vaseline round her vent to keep it nice and soft.  she is absolutley fine now but there were a few moments when I though we would have to do the decent thing!  I also got some antipeck spray as she was definatley being attacked by the other hen.

Good luck, fingers and bits crossed that she will make a full recovery and that when she next lays the problem doesn't recur.

They've all had anti-peck spray but seem to be compelled to destroy each other. :(

I'll do the vaseline thing, thanks for the tip. SHe seems happy in her box so we'll see how she is tomorrow and report back.
