Rhubarb
« on: February 09, 2009, 10:41 »
If for example someone happened to buy a £2 Rhubarb from Wilkos and then left it in the bag for 2 weeks so it went all slimy.  Then planted it and it  looks mainly dead!

Would they have killed it?  Or can it be rescued somehow?  Gosh I am so mad with myself for forgetting about it!

I bought some from Wilkos on Saturday,  Canadian Red for £2.00.

I've planted it,  do you think I'll get any fruits year or will it be next year ?

I've also heard about forcing rhubarb, has anyone tried this.

Thanks xx

Rhubarb is a vegetable - not a fruit. (Sorry - being pedantic! :tongue2:). Technically you'll get fruit from the flower spikes - which you don't want and should chop off!!

You'll get a few stems this year, but don't over harvest it and epecially do NOT force it in it's first year.

Also bear in mind that forcing a rhubarb crown renders it usless for the following season.

I forced one of my crowns once and found it not worth while as the very early variety in Mrs Digger's plot was ready first!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

How old are the crowns when bought? I ask because I know that rhubarb raised from seed shouldn't be used for the first two years.

I´ve ordered some rhubarb seed, shame I can´t eat it for the firat 2 years (if it grows)  I tried describing rhubarb to my Spanish friend yesterday-  I gave up!  You don´t get rhubarb here in Spain.  We have very sandy soil so it will be interesting to see how I get on.
