Hens eating Eggs
« on: August 19, 2009, 14:59 »
Hi Just wondering if anyone could give me some info on how I can stop my hens eating eggs. I have two Light Sussex Hens and only one is laying eggs. Either she is pecking and eating them or the other one is. Also the shell is quite soft and deformed how can I rectify this.

Thanks

Nick

Hi & welcome

How old are they?  Youngsters can lay softish eggs til they settle down, older hens will lay softer shells when they are coming to their end of laying.

Do you give them oyster shell?  They do need this for the calcium.
As for the egg eating.........empty an egg by making a smallish hole, then spoon in mustard, pop back in nest box.........................this should put them off.
Also try to remove any eggs as soon as they have been laid if possible.
Hope this helps, there are lots of threads on here if you pop soft eggs in the search bit.
