I don't remember planting all these tomatoes
« on: May 29, 2011, 19:00 »
I have just spent a few hours getting tomatoes into big pots. I don't remember planting this many.  Just a few of about five varieties.  My whole patio is covered.

i think it is an up the lottie job with most of them.

Um, yes, I've got five varieties too. I managed to slim them down to 20 plants :)

But last year I had great success with making dried tomatoes, passata and even froze a few small ones, so I know I won't be wasting any, and they are the most useful of veggies/fruit/whatever.

Think you've got problems!

I've 20 of 7 different heritage varieties in the greenhouses, then I grew two more lots for the plot and also about 100 "Shirley" for a church festival.

THEN a neighbour gave me about 150 excess plants that she was going to sling. I anticipate bringing about 100 home, on top of what I grew as my requirements.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

You'll have to set up a stall and start selling them. I sure as heck wouldn't want to have to buy the compost to pot all that lot :)

It did take a bit.

Then there were the 50 courgettes, 66 basil, 25 pots runner beans, 25 pots dwarf beans, 120 Pelargoniums.............

People started running away when they saw me coming because I was forcing them all to take plants from me. I can't bear to chuck them on the compost heap.

I'm jealous of your basil, DD. I only ended up with half a dozen plants because my evil lurcher dug up the seed trays, and I'd really like more than that. When's the latest you can sow basil?

Same problem here, OH took masses to give away at work but I still have more than I have space for. I also have five varieties, but even a pack of six sungold yielded eight plants!

When's the latest you can sow basil?

As you can grow it in pots on your window ledge, I'd have thought you could still do it if you do it that way as you won't run out of warm weather.

If it's got a good thick root you can break it up and put the pieces in shallow water to sprout or just bung bits in pots.
Worked for me!

That's what I do with my comfrey if I take cuttings, just break or cut up the root into smaller pieces and chuck them in pots.

thanks for that - i thought it might be something like that i put it in a trough shaped plastic thing today will look at it's roots tomorrow and see if I can do anything with it. It is a strong looking plant so i expect it's roots will be ok for cuttings.
