I have these little black flies on the soil on my raised bed near my red onions, what are they and how can i get rid of them. They are slightly bigger than our dreaded midge, the wings run flat along the body,(like a stone fly, if that makes sence to any fly fishers out there)they wont hang about to be swatted and they have a kind of oiley sheen to them,,,,,,any ideas?

I don't kill much on my plot as most of the insects do little damage and the birds will take a lot of them and hoverflies as well so don't try and kill everything or you'll go insane     If you've manure about they will be attracted to that.
