Title: Hens not sleeping in coop
Post by: wendyg on March 28, 2012, 09:29
I keep my hens on the allotment and have noticed over the last few days that I haven't had to clean poop out of the coop instead it is at the bottom of the ramp.  They have a small run connected to the coop and a bigger fox-proof walk-in run.  I have checked for red mite but haven't found any (I did have a few last year).  I have had them for about a year (they were POL when bought).  The only thing that has changed is that I ran out of their bedding (rapeseed straw) and had to use wood shavings, are they that fussy?  Is there any other reason why they will not sleep in the coop (they do go in to lay eggs)?

Thanks

the lack of poop in the coop could be because they are going to bed later as it stays lighter for longer so not spending as much time in the coop

i also have a lack of poop but i know they are sleeping in there as i tuck them in everynight.

mine dont like straw. they have a layer of dust free shavings and when i put straw in the nest box they kick it out (my previous chooks were not at all fussy).
