Watering tomato plants
« on: June 24, 2011, 23:12 »

My tom plants are in large plant pots stood in trays in the greenhouse, fruiting nicely  :).

I water them via inverted water bottles (400ml size) that amount daily, more so now they're in fruit.

The thing is, I know you're not supposed to leave them standing in water. Mine have a wet bottomed tray with maybe a couple of millimetres depth when I leave them each evening. The tray is dry, the following day.

Am I risking them to, is it "blossom end rot", or something?

Thanks, Mash  :)

It sounds like you are doing everything just fine - I'll be honest, in hot sunny weather, I often fill the tray with loads more water than you have because the plants will tap it into it very quickly especially in a greenhouse, and I'd much rather they had a supply than get dry which is one of the causes of blossom end rot.

Thanks BabbyAnn  :). I was led to believe that leaving their roots in water caused the damage, and that they had to breathe a little  ???

There's a "heatwave for a day" tomorrow, so I think, to cover all eventualities,  I'll do as you do today & tomorrow. thanks again  ;)

Half of my tom plants live with the bottom of the pot in an inch of water , as long as there is good sunlight to keep the plants `drinking` there is no problem.
Tomatoes grown hydroponically have wet roots 24/7. :)

my potted toms stand permanently in deep trays which are topped up daily so they can drink as much as they like ;)

By all accounts, mine aren't getting enough water, so I think I'll water from their trays in future, and not the inverted bottles.

Thanks for your advice folks, seriously much appreciated  :) ;)
