Sick lemon tree
« on: May 06, 2013, 14:36 »
Can anyone help.  My 5 year old lemon tree (potted) is not looking at all well.  Leaves have fallen off and those remaining are yellowing.  Should I just be ruthless and cut it back really hard or wait and see what happens when the weather warms up?
Many thanks for advice

Sounds as though I has been too dry during the winter, hence the leaf drop, plus it needs a good feed.

Lemon trees do respond well to pruning, so you can shape it so that there are no straggly branches.

Soak it well once a week

Give it a feed with citrus fertiliser diluted as it says on the packet

Check there are no scale insects on the branches (These seem to multiply when you are not looking, turning up from nowhere)

Keep it out of strong sunshine, and somewhere frost free

You should see new leaves starting to grow, which might look a bit purplish to start with, and possibly white flower buds too

Hope that helps

Thanks Sunshine, mine is not looking well either so I will follow your tips and see if I can save it.

They are generally saveable if the stems are all still green at the ends
