Blood on Combs!
« on: February 26, 2008, 13:04 »
I've gone out now i'm home and mrs Bennet is now in residence in the coop and the 2 weakest ones ( Henny penny and Chicken Licken) have a little blood on their combs!!!

Its only a little bit but they've obviously been pecked  What should I do? Will they just work things out?
1 x hubby
2 x daughters
3 x chickens
1 x bunny
6 x african snails  . . . . . and counting.

They should do wildeone, remember, they were in cages, so probably haven't met formally before you picked them up!!!!

They'll sort it out who's boss, but they may get the tste for the blood, so either try the purple spray, or someone mentioned tea tree cream the other day, and my stalwart.  cheap vaseline stuff mixed with a little liquid paraffin.  They may try another peck, but they won't like the taste and it'll give the combs time to heal.

I picked up a hen thi morning and noticed part of her comb was rough and brown, but it has healed itself!

Go to a horsey supplies shop Wildeone.  It's sold there for putting on wounds.  It also stops pecking as it camouflages the red colour.

Ah ha - Babe gave me some wound powder - I'd forgot.

But will that stop the pecking?

I know nothing about chickens Wildone but liquid paraffin is different from paraffin. I would hate to see a flaming chicken!
I think Boots sell liquid paraffin too.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

Thanks everyone - they seem to have healed up ok just a little scabing, and henny penny is at the bottom of the leader board i think! She hangs back in the coop in the morning and is always last to get food and water and any treats i throw in.  It just endears you even more to them doesn't it ! I aim the grapes towards Henny and keep Mrs Bennet and Lucy occupied so she can at least throw 1/2 a grape down her neck before the bullies come knocking
