Title: Coloured eggs??
Post by: chuckmad on June 16, 2010, 14:19
Which hens lay white eggs and which hens lay blue eggs?
Are there any other colour than brown/white/blue?

My Legbars don't lay blue... I'd say cream was closer to the mark.

For white eggs you want something like a leghorn (I do know Grannie Annie has exchequer leghorns - see her blog) and I have appenzellers that lay white  :)

Scabs, only cream legbars lay blue/green eggs.  Gold legbars lay cream eggs, and cotswold legbars could lay anything at all.

Thanks Casey, I had been told that one was a cream and the other possibly a gold, but they were originally bought from a farm where they are all in together, so she's probably a bit of this, a bit of that...

I've still no idea about breeds...

Me neither scabs.
What questions do I need to ask if i'm looking to get a hen that lays blue eggs?

your best bet is to get a pure breed araucana - (and make sure the breeder is reputable - I got sold some but they didn't lay blue so the cockerel wasn't araucana  - i also got some more that all died within a couple of weeks from bad hatching practises  :() however I now have blue egg layers and have hatched 11 of my own. If you want to buy some I can recommend a couple of good breeders (I don't sell my chickens) but it depends how far you are prepared to travel.

My cream legbars lay a lovely blue egg and although i also have araucanas i prefer the legbars to look at they are sooo pretty. Also cream legbars are auto sexing so sexable at birth.Just be very careful and make sure you know what your looking at when you go to see any hens .The blue egg is a big thing at the moment and if i had a £1 for every person who said they had been sold a legbar or araucana that had actually turned out to be a hybrid/cross that laid mucky green eggs i would be a very wealthy woman  ::)

there are 46 different shades of blue and green that are acceptable for pure breed araucanas so even some pure breeds can lay a greeny colour.

does anyone know why blue eggs have become popular? Is it just the novelty value or something?

I think its just novelty and people of course like a nice variety of colour in their egg box .Im not suggesting that if the egg is green the breed isnt pure i have 1 araucana girl whos egg is more green than blue .But you do get some that lay an olive green through to a khaki coloured egg. There is no problem with people selling hybrids that lay blue/green eggs as long as they are sold as that, with the relevant price tag ,i think some people call them easter eggers :D pure breeds of good quality often attract a much larger price tag and of course there is always the issue of messing up breed standards when people breed what they think is a pure breed that then turns out to be something different :(
I myself would go for a cream legbar because they are sexable from day one you can spend time taming them(they can be a bit flighty)my 2 girls are lovley and have just started laying me the most gorgeous eggs :D
