Wood Chips
« on: October 05, 2014, 23:03 »
I have just been reading an (American) article which suggests that the answer to all our moisture retention problems is to cover all the ground with wood chips.
Now I don't believe anything I read unless it's on this site  :D and I am sure I have read that this is not a good idea for all crops.
But are there some things that would benefit from mulching with wood chippings, or should they be kept for the path? We gets lots of wood chippings delivered to our site.

Thanks

Elaine

The U.S has a wide range of of climatic regions from arid desert to sub-arctic so what applies there is generally unlikely to be of much use here.

We don't have a water retention problem in Cumbria (apart from the medical one) and I don't suppose most of the UK has one either. As wood chips decompose they rob the soil of nitrogen so I can't see any advantage whatsoever in using them on your veg plot.

Mix them in with plenty of green stuff and they would make good compost

Use it on your paths and then when it's nicely rotted down turn it onto your beds  ;)
