Title: Securing canes in a greenhouse
Post by: Snap Dragon on May 31, 2008, 19:23
I put some toms, and cucumbers in the greenhouse today but they are going to need some canes soon.

Plonking a cane in a growbag isn't going to be very secure so what is the best way to secure a cane in a greenhouse so it doesn't fall over taking the plant with it?

I use growbag cane supports (http://www.gardendirect.co.uk/index.php?main_page=popup_image&pID=2855&zenid=b3j9dsh2d9664o870phc3b8704).  They last for yeeeeaaaarrrrrrrsss

I paid about £5 a set for mine at a garden centre.

I don't know what type of green house you have, but mine is a PVC walk in type and has a kind of tent pole frame, so I tied the canes to the poles.  :?
Works a treat.  8)

I'm planning to run short canes underneath the growbags (cross ways) and then attach further canes to the ends of this bottom cane, bringing them together at the top to form a tall triangle.  Then, I shall have the cane which I want to support the tomato plant pushed in the compost, and tied into the triange at the top.  If needs be I'll add wires etc to the roof of the greenhouse to further stabilise.

Did any of that make sense?

Depending on the size of your greenhouse and where you are going to put your canes, I tied a cane across the length of my ghouse on the diagonal struts and then I could tie vertical canes to these which worked well for me. Another way would be to buy some of the green plugs with holes in them. These slide into the groove in the ghouse strutr and then twist through 90 degrees. You can then tie string through the holes in the plugs and tie your canes onto these. Not a very good discription I'm afraid but it's hard to put into words.

I secure a wire from the back to the front of the greenhouse directly above where my toms are to live and then secure the canes to the wire, using either tiewraps or wire tie,s. Works fine.... :D

Thanks peeps

I think I'll try and get some of those attachments that fit into the greenhouse uprights. I'll secure a cane or some wire horizontally and the upright canes to that.
