Title: A guide to keeping ducks required
Post by: Helenaj on March 18, 2015, 13:16
Hi folks

I've had the water board on my land removing an old water tank and as a thank you they have built me a rather large duck pond! :) It's all bare earth at the moment and it has to settle, be planted and fenced so I'm not looking to populate until next year when everything is grown in properly and I'm sure that the pond is waterproof. The pond is 6mx4m (internal measurement) and gradually runs from 45cm to 1m in depth.
I'm fairly okay with the basic husbandry because I've kept chooks for years but this will be my first experiance with ducks so I don't know what to expect. I'm only looking at a maximum of 8-10 ducks (2 pairs of heavy ducks - Appleyard/Rouen and some khaki Campbells). Can anyone offer me some helpful tips.

All advice gratefully received - I'm so excited!!

Helena

Went to put my chooks out this morning only to see two wild mallards making themselves comfortable on my pond! It would appear that mother nature has decided when I get ducks and not me :D
One male and one female so they must be a breeding pair. I'm not planning to stock anything of my own until next year - it's bare earth at the moment and I was planning to seed it this weekend, but they appear to have made themselves at home. No fencing, so I hope Mr Fox stays away.

I shall watch with interest  :D :D :D :D :D
