Tiny pin hole in fuel tank
« on: February 14, 2012, 12:53 »
I've got a small hole in the briggs and stratton fuel tank, I wonder where the pertrol smell was coming from!  As it is a tiny hole can I juse use some kind of resin to repair it with?

Also now that the tank is off is it best practice to replace the gasket??

Many thanks
Andy

While there may be just one pinhole at the moment, the inside of the tanks could be riddled with potential pinholes which may  show when you start to sand it .
You could use an epoxy sealant but the inside will continue to shed rust which will block the pick up filter, usually when you need to get a job finished and its just starting to spot with rain.
To give your self a fair chance I would put in handful of small nuts or ball bearing's,some petrol and give it a good shake to remove the rust. This will hopefully loosen the rust and  identify any more leaks.Personally I weld, braze or solder tanks but not knowing your skill levels would recommend one of the off the shelf products.

Yes always replace gaskets when you take things apart. If you plan to solder, weld or apply any kind of heat, drain the tank and flush out really well with lots and lots of water. then leave it sat for at least a day full of water. then leave empty for at least a day. and do the job out side.
Me, I find somewhere to have the tank bead/grit-blasted, and get some JB weld on the holes.

Like Kleftiwallah, I've used petseal in the past. It works very well.
As for gaskets, always replace them.
