My first plot..
« on: September 23, 2008, 20:43 »
I finally got my plot today, it's part of a new batch of plot's in a field near where I live. The farmer has ploughed the field, separated each of the plots up and left us to get on with it.

I have virgin soil, a copy of The Allotment Book by Andi Clevely, an eager helper in my 7yo daughter and a head full of ideas.

Now, where to start.........   :)
We lived for days on nothing but food and water.

You're in the right place, so ask away.  No matter what some might say there is no such thing as a stupid question on here.

Oooh exciting!  Funny time of the year though for a new plot (still lots you can plant now though!)  What are your plans?  Raised beds?  Straight into the soil?  Details please!

maybe pop down to the garden centre with your little-un and see what seeds/bulbs they have, our local was selling off all the seed packets for 50p each, I also bought some onions and garlic which go in the ground around now

I just bought the book from this site as I'm fairly new to all this too, it's a very helpful book

To be honest, Im unsure..... I will make a plan and see where it leads me. I dont expect to get growing till next spring, will simply work on the layout over the next few months.

Hi Sideways.

Good luck on the plot.

I found this site useful.  www.growveg.com.

Measure your plot & your away. The fee is reasonable.

Hi and good morning sideways. As you can see we are up early.
I would certainly start digging and would prepare an area for some over winter broad beans.
The fitness campaign starts now.
Good luck :D

Sounds like a good idea to me!

Broad Beans, Garlic, onions, shallots and spinach.

Can these simply be grown from seeds now? Turn the soil, drop in the seeds and away you go?

Prepare the ground now for the beans, dig some manure in if poss and plant the seeds [Aquaduice Claudia] middle to end of October, They will be on your plate April time. I shall put 3 packets in.
Onions can go in now, not sure about garlic.

Thanks Digger.

It's going to be a busy few weeks, the plot is literally a rectangle of freshly turned soil. I have been sketching some layout ideas and making notes on what I plan to grow. I need to get digging and defining areas, I have pallets for my compost bin and have built a sturdy tool box (sheds are not allowed but the field is quite secluded). I even treated myself to a new spade! Luckily, my birthday is coming up and I have made a list of tools and stuff I think will come in handy.

How is best to prepare the ground for the beans? How big an area should I allow? Beans and peas are a favourite veg in our household.

Bit of a silly answer really ,how much space depends on how many you want.I shall plant three packets and have allowed about 6ft sq which allows for access down the middle.
As regards prep. dig manure in and get a reasonably firm surface which will help with any movement in growth.
Broad beans are very easy.
