Purple sprouting
« on: February 10, 2012, 21:11 »
i have had it in my allotment for god knows how long. and still it is only about a meter high and doesnt seem to be doing anything. is it worth leaving it in the ground or not?

Mine's less than that and I'm leaving it to get on with things - never grown it before though!  I wonder if there are different varieties that do their 'thing' at different times of year?
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

You average variety will only get to a metre high.

Some of mine had produced due to the warm start we had to the winter. It should normally start producing March/April, maybe a bit earlier in the Channel Islands.

It's way too soon to give up on it.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I bought a packet of four types of sprouting broc seeds 2 years ago they all needed sowing between jan and march.     but the varieties meant you had sprouting broc all year round.  It has been mostly sucessful over the last years and will be sowing the same again this year.       summer purple,  arrow are two varieties can't remember the other two will have to look at the packet tomorrow

Proper old fashioned purple sprouting will produce March/April according to the season. Just right when there is little else.

Rudolph is earlier and started producing about 3 weeks ago. Hopefully it will continue once the weather gets a little warmer but it is standing still at the moment.

I've got about 20 plants ,up until the really cold weather came along, they were about 4ft

high and spread out firmly.

They have some florets coming through but have all drooped over and look a little sorry for

themselves.

I`ve been picking purple sprouting continuously since last June. Picked some a couple of days ago from a plant that has been cropping for a good six months.
I`m left handed, what`s your excuse?

I haven't space to put too many plants in so buy a small tray in the autumn. They are supposed to be ready in spring, but this year they have been cropping since before Christmas. We have a pile for tonight. Usually at this time of the year I'm impatiently inspecting for any signs of purple.

I think I have that one too rubysose, it's the Unwins Broccoli All Season Collection.
Just for info, if anyone wants to but them separately:-
Rudolph, Sow:Mar-Jun, Havest:Nov-Feb
Red Arrow, Sow:Mar-May, Harvest:Feb-Mar
Redhead, Sow:Mar-May, Harvest:Mar-April
Summer Purple, Sow:Jan-Mar, Harvest:Jun-Oct
Just sown my Summer Purple and I think there were about 80 seeds in the pack...
