Title: Summers first brood 9/10
Post by: ANHBUC on June 21, 2013, 10:43
Summer is one of my Welsummer bantams and she has been sitting on 10 eggs, 1 from Dotty and the other 9 a mixture from her and Cilla my other Welsummer bantam.  They were due to hatch today but decided to make an appearance a little early yesterday afternoon/night.  A head count this morning is 9 out of 10 hatched and looking well.  Final egg has no signs of pipping but I will leave it until Summer decides it won't hatch or possibly it will.

They are so lovely.  :)  I am not going to show those pics to my OH - he would love to have some eggs for hatching but would not be able to do the deed if some turned out to be boys and then where would we be.  ::)

Surrounded by cockerels and hens.   ::)

They are rehomed or dispatched when they start crowing and make a nice meal.

The little light chick is probably from Dotty.

There were 4 young cockerels running with the ladies so they are going to be a proper farmyard mixture.  I am really looking forward to seeing what colouring I get.   :D

Do you live on a farm? Just seen your other chicken posts lol.

I would love the space to have a good mixture of birds.

  No just a decent sized garden but hubby and friends do keep joking about me getting pigs, sheep, alpacas etc.   ::)  Just in the middle of organising the bottom of the garden for them so it looks like a building site at the moment.

Summer is a beauty.

She is apart from her legs as she had scaley leg mite and hasn't gone through a molt since treatment.  It is amazing how they know what to do when they have chicks.   :)

That is very naughty of you snowdrops, I don't need any encouragement.     I am fighting the urge to get Muscovy ducks but I know I shouldn't!

They are beautiful though, I think I have seen their website before whilst I was just browsing.

Unfortunately there is no land available near to us.  I think they only spit when they feel threatened but it is meant to stink.

very true but there eggs are great and they make lovely eating :) However if you have geese the drake will pester the geese at that time of year . Muscovys are not true ducks but are related to geese !

Hubby keeps saying they are too messy, will destroy our pond and eat the fish.  Just a good job I have my hands full with chicks, sorting runs and trying to soundproofing cockerel accommodation at the moment.  Nothing got done today, we have had the odd glimmer of sun but mostly heavy showers and then thunderstorms.  Ducks would have been right at home as the full garden was flooded!   ::)

Summer is being a great mum teaching her chicks how to forage in all the best places and making sure they are back to safety before it gets too dark.

Awww lovely. We should have had some month (or more) old wyandottes from the incubator by now but we lost the lot near to hatching due to power cuts when we had nearly two weeks of bad storms. The power is cut off in the village to minimise damage. We will be more prepared next time. :(

:(  That is sad tosca.  I still prefer using a broody but invested in an incubator as you can use them as and when needed.
