Name that pest...
« on: April 17, 2019, 17:51 »
Hi,

So, in my greenhouse I have some rather nice sprout plants.  Between 07:00 and 17:00 today something has taken great chunks out of the leaves.

No sign of caterpillars, no sign of slime on the pots (so no slugs / snails).  So, the only thing I can think of are mammals with 4 legs, i.e. mice or worst, rats.

The pot was on a shelf (waist high) and in a tray.  The door was open in the day, but although we do get huge, chicken size pigeons I’d struggle to believe they’d be a brazen as to fly into the greenhouse – even if they did, I doubt their guts would have stopped them at one plant.

Any ideas?

Looks like slug/snail damage to me.
They don't always leave an obvious trial. Definitely not rodents.

I think pidgeons would start eating from the top wdge of the leaves. I agree with your comments about the blighters!  I should set up CCTV!

Cheers,  Tony.

Rodents wouldn't make circular holes like that so I'm going for slugs or snails too. They can hide under the g-house staging or other secret places so put a few pellets on the tray and see what you find the next day.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.
