I planted some over winter onion sets last autumn.  One set seems to have been lost except for the odd one that is shooting up here and there.  My questions are do you think they have really gone, and if they have can I plant more onions over the same place or should I plant something else there instead?

I should know the answer to this but this has me dithering

Well, I would wait and see. If nothing appears by mid to end of March (depending on weather), I would put in spring-planting onion sets in the spaces.

Thats what I was thinking!!  Just planted some seeds a couple of days ago.

They should have been up ages ago.. Like over the winter.. I'd leave them to see if they will do anything but I'd get new summer sets and get them in over the next few weeks.  I normally plant a packet in the second week of March then the rest in the first week in April.. My winter onions are ready fro pulling as green onions like leeks ion 1st may every year.

They get pulled out by birds, taken down by moles only to reappear yards away  or they've rotted, or not yet got going.  I generally wait a bit and then if nothing happens I pop in a replacement bulb (set) or module raised plant
