Off to bed?
« on: November 07, 2007, 16:54 »
So I was speaking to Vernon down the plots and he was being really pissy about my plans to do raised beds.

The main reason I was gonna do them was to create a little order, lay some paths my little monkey can run around on while I weed with one eye and watch him with the other, although I am planning to leave about 1/3 planted with fruit bushes (rasp, goose, bloo berries and some rhubarbs).

What does everyone else think is the pros and cons?

I reckon you should get Vernon on the forum to join the debate.

Tell us more about your plans - area involved, type of soil, do you rotovate, etc

i find beds easier - my dogs stay on the paths - so they can be with me - which is important

i find it's easier to plan the rotation of crops

easier to water

paths make it better to get around - especially with wheelbarrow

i like the plot broken up into bits - not so daunting either - when you need to dig - just 1 bed at a time

weeding 1 bed at a time is less daunting too

as someone with a not so able body (sometimes) i find beds much more manageable on the not so good days

Munty is ex-Marines.  I used language from the Diplomatic Service ... "get Vernon on the forum to join the debate. "

I tend to think so, still don't know who Vernon is. I mean does he work on the farm or just has opinions?

thank you
thank you for all your replies - I am going with the beds.  I have weedkillered (against my initial wishes) and cant grow anything until February time, except for the fruit area which I hand weeded and dug over, so this is a good time to plan and sort out the construction element.

My husband will be delighted  :D

one more question
One more question....

I was planning to mulch around my bushes with some chippings but I am not sure this is ideal - at home the neighbourhood felines enjoy pooping in the mulch and I am concerned foxes and other turd curling animals will find equal fascination with any mulch I use on the lottie.
