Marshalls rasberries
« on: April 04, 2011, 22:05 »
For Christmas, i got twelve rasberrie canes from my grandma and granddad, the are autumn bliss variety. They were all planted into one long raised bed, all planted at the same time, in the same conditions, all were given the same dosage of blood, fish and bone, all have been kept well watered and looked after.
At the moment, I have 6, very healthy looking plants, with lots of healthy foliage and shoots, all in all, very healthy. However, the other 6 are quite the opposite, essentially they are just twigs in the ground, no sign of life, and when i have done the old peel a bit of bark away trick, its revealed a brown woody stick.
Normally, I wouldn't be too concerned at this point if all of them had no foliage and looked like this, but with 6 doing very healthy and starting to lose hope for the other 6.

My question is, should i leave them longer and just take them out and find a appropriate replacement if they dont pick up. Or should I take them out now and send a email or letter to marshalls with a photo showing them the rasberries? Or any other ideas?

If you want to be happy forever - take up gardening!

Have you double checked there's no drainage problem at the 'dead' end of the bed?

How far on are the 'growing' ones?  I'd consider taking a photo now if the growth is quite pronounced and therefore the other canes can't be said to be only slightly delayed.

I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

There is no drainage problem that i can see because its not like one side is growing and one isnt, there all mixed in together so theyve all had the exact same growing conditions.

Ill take a few photos like you say, the 'growing ones' have a good few inches of growth on them at least

I also had problems with raspberry canes from that retailer, but to be fair when i wrote to them they were very good about offering a refund or replacement product. Give the canes another couple of weeks and see what happens, if it is still nothing then get in touch with customer services.

Always thankful for advice!

Just curious - how were they packaged? Were they all together in one container, or as two seperate 6 packs? I'm ondering if you were given 6 fresh ones and 6 older and perhaps nearly dead ones.

It seems sort of a coincidence that you have 6 good and 6 bad.
