Hi everyone,
Sorry I haven't been posting of late but I have been reading the usual flow of advice (and banter!). Question - Is it normal for egg size to fluctuate significantly? I collected an egg this morning from one of my little hybrids and it was like an ostrich egg!!! It was literally twice the size of the others. The poor bird must be walking like John Wayne!! Is this normal or is there trouble on the horizon??

As always I am grateful for the comments of the more experienced members of the "family".

Hi Des,

Had the same with my two and posted a query. Apparently it's nothing the worry about.

Below is a piccie of Thelma's biggest ! On average they were weighing 56g - this one was 93g. OUCH

Let us know what they are like when you crack them.  Single yolk, double yolk, egg in an egg.  All possibilities

Forgot to mention that Aunt Sally.

Thelma's big one was a double yolker. I was doing somersaults I was that excited, but haven't had one since. Louise's by comparison are still quite a bit smaller, slightly darker shell and sometimes brown speckles. They are the same hybrids and the same age though.

All the larger eggs we get have very watery whites, I think its because they don't lay every day, or they are older chooks, but out of this lot, we've not had one double yolk.  The last lot of chooks we had, there wree loads of double yolkers!

The huge egg turned out to be a double yolker which was claimed by my youngest daughter and chief hen-helper. Let's hope that the trend continues!

Thanks for that Aunty, yes, its because the chooks are older isn't it, rather than because they are stale.  The 107gms egg I put into a victoria sandwich, and yes it had a watery white, and only the single yolk.

[/IMG]

but it doesn't look that big in the photo.  I should have chosen a much smaller companion egg!!!
