Dying Hens
« on: March 15, 2009, 12:14 »
Yesterday I had to cull one of my hens as it was smelling from it's rear end, not moving around and hunched up with one leg in the air. Whenever you were to tip the hen over to look at it's bum clear yellow liquid and a lot of it was coming out of it's beak. It was not egg bound and I've had 2 other hens die like this. I'm really getting fed up.
Please can you help me. I've cleaned out the coop and disinfected it as well.
Any information would be helpful.
Thanks.

As this is the third hen to die in this way, I would suggest a visit to a chicken Vet would have been in order.
Is it too late to take this third hen for a post mortem?
Good luck.

How many more hens do you have ?

As cathangirl says you need professional treatment/advice.  It sounds like a very nasty and infectious disease !

Way too late I have already buried it and put lime all over it to help with the decomposition and to get rid of any diseases.

I have 2 hens left and today I started building a bigger coop for more chickens. I'm getting six more.

Hi NHL

Bear in mind that your 2 remaining hens may yet shows symptoms and the ground could well re-infect any new stock.

It may be best to wait a while before getting any new birds.

Have any of your chicken keeping friends had any sickness in their flocks recently?
I demand the right to buy seed of varieties that are not "distinct, uniform and stable".
