Great Thanks!  I can see my shredder will be working hard whilst I "re-organise" the office during this depressing weather!  I have just purchased 12 build-a-ball balls and managed to get some suitable supports down at the local scrap/rubbish depo.  Just need to get the netting now.

Hi Sassy
Just to let you know that I have been using play balls 200 FOR £7 at ASDA!!
I have been using these to create my frame for netting.

I was just wondering if you did put shredded paper in, if the ink in the paper is in anyway harmful or non-organic? I doubt it, but I can't help but wonder.

Most companies have switched to vegetable dye inks, which are safe for any use.
I use shredded paper in my compost, but just watch how thickly you add them. You need only 3 inches before you must add raw matter.
As for worms in the compost, if they're there, then your pile isn't heating properly and killing off weed seeds and such.

Sassy Lassy,
Go for it.
I put a sackful of paper into my compost every week.
Its especially good if you have a lot of grass cuttings going in there too.
All helps to make a good mix.

I shred all junk mail, toilet and kitchen roll inserts, along with any other non-glossy paper products.
I also tear up newspaper (most inks used there are soya based, I believe)
The tiny amount of ink on any other paper products (mail etc) aren't going to  have any detrimental affect on anything. There's probably more airborne pollutants getting to your compo than you are ever likely to introduce with printed paper pollutants.
The successes and failures of each year keep me motivated for the following year.

With so much identity theft going about, we now shred all of our old bills, offers of ready-to-go credit cards, personal papers, etc and put them in the compost and quickly top it with sloppy kitchen waste. identity thieves must look hard to find things like that in our waste bins. We also feel happier knowing exactly where those papers are and their imminent contribution.

Some growers propagate plants in shredded carpet fibres. Its the new 'green'  growing medium that is about to get very sexy.

old carpet is no good the fireproofing in it is toxic . thats why you shouldn't use on your allotment.           A selfappointed scientist told me this--

The worms love paper and cardboard as long as you damp it down first and at the end ofg the day the worms have been composting since the beginning of time so I think they have it sussed by now.
I know less today than I did yesterday, and I knew nothing then!
