i have lots of these on the seed heads of some of my flowers and up the stems  and all over the place really they don't seem to be doing any harm but a neighbour has said they ate his daffodils ? they are the same bug they are the size o a large ant long thin body are black with a red stripe on each side they have a , don't know the word , thing for sucking stuff out of plants but the plants don't seem to be suffering .

ooh err Chrissie, I have no idea what it is. I will look in my books and see if I can find it for you though. Sounds too fat for vine weevil which is a good thing.  :roll:  :wink:
I know less today than I did yesterday, and I knew nothing then!

these are about the size of a large ant , they fly and have a red stripe down each side , for the shear numbers of them there dosent seem to be any damage but would like to make sure .

Could it be an Ichnuemon Fly. They look like large ants and there is one that is black with red on it. They lay their eggs in the live body of a host insect.

sorry I'm a technophobe i have a photo bucket thingy but cannot get from there to the post .
but painting a pic i would sat its got the head of an ant black but with a Sukey thing not jaws , its the length of a thumbnail and is black in the middle with a red stripe on each side and it flies , but they are now the least of my worries as the roses are blooming there are huge iridescent green bugs and smaller black ones eating the centres of the roses and irises and making an awful mess , but have found that a quick squirt with cockroach spray soon get hot of them .
