Snail traps - bait?
« on: March 24, 2008, 11:57 »
Just bought some nice snail traps to dot around the garden. I have used beer in the past but what a waste of good beer, At least the slugs die happy! I was told you can also use lemonade, milk or yeast in water. Has anyone used these before and if so what success rate. Is there anything else I've not mentioned that is worth a try.
I also currentlyuse Nemaslug to control the slugs below ground and have found a really cheap source of supply on ebay £8.99 +£1.00 p &p anyone know of a cheaper source?

Hi Leligdowicz, do you have the name of the place on Ebay where you have seen Nemaslug for that price? I would like to give it a try this year.

Thanks

Thanks for the nemaslug tip!

I've got some snail traps but have been listening to tales of the wonders of these little critters from my allotment neighbour for a while now!  I've ordered some and look forward to seeing how they do.

Cheers,

Jim

In my slug traps I've tried beer, yeast and water, salt water and lettuce leaves,  all seemed to work equally well.

Glad to hear I've been of some help. I've used Nemaslug fo two years now & found it to be of real benefit. You have to re-apply it ever six weeks to be really effective. Up here the slugs are terrible. Not sure what iI hate more, slugs or midges!!

Hi Carol, I take it you mix lettuce leaves & salt water?

Yes - I just made up a bit of strong salt water in the bottom of the trap, about half inch deep, then lay in a bit of lettuce leaf on top.  Seems to catch lots of the little tiny grey/white ones.  Not too sure of the best way to dispose of them though - the yeast and beer ones just go in the compost, but I'm not too sure whether salt in the compost is a good idea.
