Hello!

Can anyone help, I always thought brown bases to tomatoes was all about not watering them enough. However, the plants are kept well watered. What else could it be? They are large Italian variety.

Any help would be well received.

Lack of calcium in compost?
Adding some natural Dolomitic lime provides the calcium the tomatoes need, to prevent BER as long as they are watered enough.
Soil usually provides enough calcium, but potting composts can often do with a little help IMO

Preventing blotchy ripening, splitting and BER all seem to depend on consistency of not only watering, but also feeding - toms don't react well to big variations in either soil moisture or nutrients (or extremes of temperature, although it's harder to control that particular variable.)

Some varieties seem more prone than others to one or more of the above problems - I always had some Inca plum tomatoes with BER, and I never found a way of preventing Sungold tomatoes splitting more often than not.

Assuming you are giving liquid feed, you could try using it half strength but twice as often to try to keep the soil chemistry a bit more constant.
