Title: failing clematis
Post by: stompy on June 17, 2008, 09:16
i'v got a bit of a problem with a clematis, every year it starts off growing really well, then the smaller leaves begin to shrivel and it flowers very poorly.

i'v tried most of the proprietry bug and mould killers but to no avail, ther are a few green flies an some very small purple bugs that i can't identify on the plant along with some ants.

:? please please can someone help because im now thinking of removing it completely

Clematis get clematis wilt I wonder if its this. Quite often the plant dies completely.  You are supposed to plant deeply and shade the roots. Take a look at this you may be able to help the plant for next year:

I'd think it would have died by now if it was clematis wilt, it can happen real fast.

If it's a young and/or small plant, the aphids (ants) can devastate it, also they can infect it with some disease, don't know what the purple bugs are.

Photo would be of help.
